A full-day safari to the Ngorongoro Crater from Arusha with Twinklestar Tours & Safaris is a worthwhile, albeit long, day trip that offers incredible wildlife viewing opportunities in a stunning natural setting.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), also commonly referred to in short as Ngorongoro Crater, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northern Tanzania, about 180 km (110 miles) west of Arusha. Spanning a vast area of 8,292 square kilometers (3,202 square miles), it’s a unique protected area where wildlife coexists with the semi-nomadic Maasai people who practice traditional livestock grazing.

Please Note: The crater rim is at a high altitude (around 2,300 meters or 7,500 feet), so be mindful of potential altitude effects, although the day trip duration usually doesn’t pose a significant risk for most people.

NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA FULL DAY SAFARI HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ngorongoro Crater: The heart of the NCA is the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact, inactive, and unfilled volcanic caldera. Formed about 2.5 to 3 million years ago when a massive volcano erupted and collapsed, the crater is about 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). This enclosed ecosystem is home to a remarkably high concentration of diverse wildlife, often referred to as “Africa’s Garden of Eden.”
  • Wildlife Paradise: The Crater floor supports a population of around 25,000 large animals, including the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the endangered black rhinoceros). Other common sightings include wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, hyena, and a variety of birdlife (over 500 species, including flamingos at Lake Magadi). Notably absent from the crater floor are giraffes and impalas, likely due to the steep crater walls.
  • Olduvai Gorge: Situated within the NCA, the Olduvai Gorge (sometimes called Oldupai Gorge) is a significant archaeological site. It’s considered a crucial location in understanding early human evolution, with the discovery of some of the earliest known hominin fossils, including those of Homo habilis and Australopithecus boisei.
  • Cultural Significance: The NCA is not just about wildlife; it’s also home to the Maasai people, who have traditionally lived in the area. Their cultural practices and way of life are an integral part of the conservation area. Archaeological sites within the NCA, like Olduvai Gorge and others, hold immense cultural and historical value, showcasing millions of years of human evolution and human-environment interaction.
  • Diverse Landscapes: Beyond the crater, the NCA encompasses a variety of habitats, including highland plains, savanna woodlands, forests, mountains (like Mount Lolmalasin), volcanic craters (like Olmoti and Empakaai), lakes, rivers, and swampland. This diversity supports a wide range of flora and fauna.
  • The Great Migration: The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem and plays a role in the annual Great Migration of wildebeest, zebras, and other ungulates, particularly in the Ndutu plains area during the calving season (roughly December to March).
