Millions of wildebeests, hundreds of thousands of zebras, and antelopes form a huge team that goes north from the Serengeti Reserve in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and starts the journey by traveling more than 3,000 kilometers in the month of mid-June.
During the migration, many carnivores including Lions, Leopards, hyenas, jackals, and crocodiles become very active and ready to ambush wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes. These carnivores are ready to share the upcoming feast.
WITNESS THE GREAT MIGRATION: A CYCLE OF LIFE AND SURVIVAL IN THE SERENGETI
During the month of June, large numbers of small wildebeests are born during the migration whereby only the lucky ones survive. The Migration continues until late October after a rainy season at the other side of Serengeti, whereby they return when there are more grass and water.
The herds participating in the Great Migration are divided into the “three armies”, the front, the middle, and the back; the first is more than 200,000 wild zebras, followed by a million wildebeests, and 500,000 gazelles are behind. Because zebras like to eat high-level new grass, the middle-level young grass is just the food for the wildebeest, and the low-level short grass is the delicacy of a dwarf gazelle.
